While it takes boiling water without cracking, the glass is very thin so not long after receiving them, I broke one just by drying vigorously (twisted too hard on the top edge!) You cannot make just one or two cups of tea because the leaves won't be under water - the basket is too short for anything below about 3/4 full and best if nearly full. I've now switched to making tea (for iced tea) in a smaller cup then mixing with water in the remaining beaker. Good idea if the basket were longer.

One fell out of the freezer onto the tile floor and a piece cracked off before it could even be eaten. When you use them, ice cream melts down from the part that pushes the ice cream up. It oozes down the handle so your hand gets all gooey. I sure wish these worked better because I would sure be buying more. Unless a new design or better working material is used, please note the above problems before you buy so you know what to expect. FOLLOW UP: I contacted the company who made these thinking maybe mine were defective. After e-mailing them on 3 different occasions with no response, I'm assuming they know of this flaw and are planning to do nothing about it. Save your money and don't buy these items.

(More customer reviews)EDIT 07/23/09: Another month and another trade event. I made approximately 500-600 snow cones at this event and the machine performed perfectly without any problems at all. This machine is certainly well built and will serve you well. I can't recommend this machine highly enough.
ORIGINAL REVIEW FOLLOWS:
I bought this unit for a three-day trade event and it performed perfectly. I easily made back the purchase price of the unit without issue, so the price point on this item is wonderful.
The motor is strong and it crushes ice quickly if left at the factory setting. I found that the ice is a bit coarse for some people as calibrated at the factory, so I adjusted the blades to produce a VERY fine snow. The finer snow absorbs the flavorings much better than coarse ice and has a more "Italian Ice" look to it.
The instruction manual for the unit does not tell you how to adjust the blades, so I will tell you now:
1. MAKE SURE THE UNIT IS UNPLUGGED!
2. Lay the unit on its side, with the door facing up.
3. Use the hex wrench that came with the machine to loosen the blade assembly set screws. This is done be reaching into the hole that the ice falls from when grinding, rotating the assembly, then finding the set screws. You will need to rotate the assembly again when the screws are loose or they will make contact when you try to remove the cutter assembly.
4. Push the cutter assembly off the shaft and into the ice chute. Be careful not to cut yourself on the sharp blades.
5. Use a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the two screws on each blade.
6. Move the blades IN to shave the ice finer or OUT for a course, crushed ice.
7. Tighten the screws and reassemble the unit.
You will need to experiment a bit to get the perfect shave/crush, but it is worth it.
Things to note:
The ice tray does not drain very well, so you might want to prop up the end opposite the drain in order to help water flow to the drain. I also backed the drain out until the plastic portion that goes into the pan was flush with the inside of the pan in order to help it drain better.
You WILL spill water all over the place when you try to clean the tray if you don't use some towels to dry it before attempting to remove it, as you have to lean the tray considerably to get the drain to come out of the case. Another suggestion is to put a plug in the drain when you are removing the tray, otherwise water will certainly pour out if you don't soak up water from it.
The motor seems to be very strong and I expect it to run for quite some time. I made hundreds of snow cones without any issues and the machine performed perfectly the whole time.
The product information doesn't mention it, but there is a decal on the front of the unit that says "Sno-Cones." The decal looks nice and helps advertise your product.
Overall, I would give this unit an 8.5 out of 10. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)I bought this icy machine about three years ago, and I absolutely loved it. I liked the look, and it shaved ice very well. I paid around 50 to 60 for this product. After making approximately 50 snow cones in it though, it broke. The gears just kept grinding, but it would not shave ice anymore. I figured the blades had gotten dull. Therefore, I went out and bought a 30 dollar sharpening kit from a local hardware store. I sharpened the blades where they would cut the hair off of my arm like a razor. Still, it would not work. Therefore, I paid about a dollar per cup of shaved ice. I would have been better off buying my slushies at the local convenience store after I factored in the cost of ice and flavoring. It just is not worth the price for as little amount of time as it last.

(More customer reviews)I started out buying two of these after reading the reviews challenging the durability of this ice tray. Since I had a few extra bucks to get to the free supersaving shipping, I figured I might as well get two just in case I break one. I am glad that i bought two, but not because I broke one. I have found that if you just gently flex the ice cube trays, 95% of the ice cubes seem to come out quite easily. When I still has 2 or 3 that wouldn't move I hit the tray against the ice cube holder and they came out pretty easily. I don't know what these other guys were doing exactly when they broke them. I mean i could see how you can easily break these if you don't pay attention, but i was able to feel how much give the trays had in their flexibility. Maybe they just got stuck on getting one out that was particularly stubborn, but when that happens i simply left it and refilled with it in and it usually came out the second time. They are fairly thick trays and the lip around the top does a really go job of preventing any spills from the sink to the freezer. Anyways, as I mentioned earlier, I am glad I bought two. I go through enough Ice to where I need two to keep a consistent full stock of ice.

(More customer reviews)I bought this Finum Iced Tea pitcher after seeing it in a store. I was trying to replace an old style Bodum glass tea pot with steeper(after I broker the glass) that is no longer in production.
I like the Finum pitcher but my only criticism is that the way the steeper sits in the pitcher (up high) doesn't allow the tea to steep as well as it should. This is especially noticeable when there is ice in the pitcher because I think it cools the water down.
I'm using loose tea and still experimenting. What I have found is that it is best to let the tea steep longer or use less ice.

I have no way of knowing if this is your first stop seeking reviews of Viking kitchen products, or if you have come across this review among many more. Either way you should be advised that Viking has changed the model number of this unit slightly on at least two occasions effectively hiding the numerous bad reviews it receives. Still, in the end that won't help the poor performance, unreliability, or the customer service.
Try a search for reviews of Viking VCBB363L around the the internet and you will probably find all sorts of references to problems both with the refrigerator and also with Viking customer service.
But don't stop there. Presumably if you are interested in the Viking refrigerator you are also interested in a Viking range, after all most people buy them as a matched setup. So be sure look for reviews on the ranges as well. They fair no better than the fridge.
To read my personal experience click on the link in the header of this review near my name to "see all my reviews;" and then look through them for 2 separate reviews of this fridge plus another one re: my Viking range. You will also notice there how Viking has erased all references in the title section of the fridge on those old reviews in order to make it harder for people like you to find the plethora of reviews out there like mine by using common search engines.
The remarkably poor attitude of Viking toward customer service cripples these appliances more than anything... far eclipsing even the very dissapointing performance. The idea that you can count on being on a first-name-basis with your local Viking repair tech soon after spending a small fortune for kitchen appliances speaks volumes in-and-of itself.The quick summary: Save yourself frustration, money, trouble, and food. Pick another brand of appliances.

(More customer reviews)Did a lot of research on refrigerators before purchasing this item. Settled on a maytag because I heard bad things about the samsungs, and I figured Maytag has been making friges for a lot longer. From day 1, I have had problems. As soon as it arrived and I plugged it in, it started icing up the fridge part, even on the factory middle of the road settings. I called Maytag and they suggested I turn it down, so I did, then the freezer wasn't cold enough, so I turned it back up, and somehow that fixed the ice problem. Whatever. Then, 2.5 months into ownership, it quit cooling altogether, ruining all my food, and causing frozen dough to rise and make a mess in my freezer. Called Maytag and they sent out a serviceman, conveniently between the hours of 8 and 5. Turned out to be a relay, which of course they had to order and told me they would be out between the same convenient hours of 8 to 5 just to install it. If I did it myself, I was told it would void the warranty. It seems like nothing these days is quality, and everything is nothing more than imported foreign crap. Oh and another thing, whatever water pump this fridge uses to make ice has got to be the loudest one they could find. Its absurd that they think this is acceptable. Won't be buying another Maytag, Whirlpool, Amana, or whatever other junk they slap their various brands on.

I'm talking about the little tray that sits beneath the water dispensor that collects any drips after the water is is shut off. Not only is it cheap looking it locks in so tight that it is almost impossible to get out and clean. If you have hard water it looks like a mess after only a couple of times using it.

However, I have had problems each time I've used them (which has been about 3 times) with leaking, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or my set is defective in some way, but all of the molds leak once I pour the liquid mix into them. I have to put down paper towels in my freezer to sop up what leaks out while they are freezing not to mention rush to the freezer once I have them full. Also, be sure that the molds are on a very flat shelf in the freezer, if they tilt at all the leaking will be even worse. Some of the shelves in my freezer have ridges in them, which created another problem for us. I tried "nesting" the molds together for freezing like the instructions recommended, but mine won't stay together. The penguin handles are cute, but I think would work better if they were longer. We tried one of the recipes that came with the molds, the Dripless Zoo Pops made with Jell-O and they turned out really yummy. Since my daughter enjoys them so much I will keep using them...and cleaning up sticky messes in my freezer!
