Cuisinart ICE-21R Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker, Red Review

Cuisinart ICE-21R Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream and Sorbet Maker, Red
Average Reviews:

This ice cream maker is wonderful. Its the best ice cream I have had in a long time. No ice or salt needed, just freeze the bowl overnight and the next day you have soft serve in 30 minutes or less. We have tried a couple of the recipes that were in the book that came with the ice cream maker. Both were far superior to store bought ice cream and were easier than I would expect. Especially the custard version. Its a huge difference if you chill your mix overnight before churning. We usually put bowl in the freezer and the mix in the fridge the night before so both are ready to go the next day. Everyone so far has been impressed with the final result and with the holidays I see this being a staple for entertaining guests.

KitchenAid KICA0WH Ice Cream Maker Attachment Review

KitchenAid KICA0WH Ice Cream Maker Attachment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this after reading a lot of reviews. My choice was based on a number of factors. I have owned a hand-crank, ice-and-salt ice cream maker in the past - it made great ice cream but was messy; I didn't want yet another appliance that I had to find where to store; and I have owned and liked my KitchenAid stand mixer for a number of years.
This is basically a double-walled, sealed mixing bowl, with the space inside the walls filled with some liquid (presumably like the refreezable ice packs). It comes with plastic paddle. The basic steps are:
1Freeze the bowl (I keep mine in the freezer)
2Make and cool an ice cream custard, or a fruit mix for sorbet
3Assemble the frozen bowl and the plastic paddle on the stand mixer
4 Switch the mixer on lowest speed, add the custard
5Let the mixer stir the mix until it freezes (to a "soft serve" consistency)
6Transfer the ice cream to a bowl with a lid, and freeze until firm
Here are my comments:
First, take a black marker and obliterate all the nutritional information about the recipes in the instruction book. We know that ice cream is full of fat and sugar -- that's why we like it! We don't need reminding.
*Try a dry run to assemble the bowl and paddle. This is designed to fit many models of KitchenAid mixers, and it's not obvious. You don't want to be figuring this out when you are ready to make your first batch.
*Freeze the bowl for longer than the suggested 18 hours
*MAKE HALF QUANTITIES: the two-quart recipes fill the bowl, and I had a couple of overflows as the ice cream expands as it cools.
*Also, filling the bowl means that the ice cream takes longer to freeze. The first time I tried this, it didn't freeze as the bowl had not been frozen long enough to handle the two quarts.
*Get a good recipe to use up the egg whites. I make meringue from the New York Times Cook Book. I guess an omelet would be good too.
*There's mistake in the instruction book. In one place it suggests adding the fruit, nuts etc half way through the freezing process, and in another place it suggests adding these ingredients at the end of the mixing cycle.
* Use enough mix (custard or fruit puree) to at least fill half of the bowl -- this way the paddle will mix the entire batch.
* Remember that freezing enhances the sweet taste -- so do not over sweeten the mix before you freeze, otherwise the ice cream or sorbet will be too sweet.
* If you're making a fruit puree for sorbet, a blender makes a *MUCH* smoother puree than a food processor. I think this makes a difference in the texture of the final sorbet.
* After preparation, you need to cool the custard or puree in the fridge for a few hours. Use a jug that has a decent pouring lip: this will make it much easier to pour into the freezer bowl than if you just use a regular mixing bowl.
* There is very little space between the edge of the bowl and the paddle -- this can mean a mess when you fill the bowl. It **really** needs a pouring spout designed to fit
* Getting the semi-frozen desert out of the bowl can be messy - there is no handle on the bowl and it has smooth, slippery sides.
* Use a container for the final freezing that has a little air space after you fill with the semi-frozen ice cream -- this allows for additional expansion of the desert, and prevents the need to squash the final product into the bowl.
* I've used recipes from The New York Times Cookbook and Fine Cooking magazine -- all delicious, better than store bought, and slightly different than the regular recipes for vanilla, cookies and cream, etc.
* Use the freshest eggs you can find -- not the ones that have been sitting in the fridge door for a month

Thanks very much to all the kind comments that folks have left. For those of you who haven't read the comments on this review: it's worthwhile taking a few minutes to do so as some of the commenters have additional suggestions and ideas.
Update December 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A couple of the recent comments have asked whether the inside of the bowl is aluminum or non-stick. It *appears* to be metallic, but with plastics these days, it's anybody's guess. It is light gray so could be aluminum, but I'd wager that it is some sort of alloy. It is definitely NOT the type of non-stick found in Teflon-type frying pans.
BTW - I've had this for nearly four years and am still loving it. Long term durability seems to be good.
Kalorik ICBM30155 Silver-Spray Portable Ice-Cube Maker Review
Kalorik ICBM30155 Silver-Spray Portable Ice-Cube Maker
Average Reviews:
I was a bit concerned about buying this because the reviews were not too good. But it arrived on time and in good condition. As one reviewer pointed out, the user guide leaves a lot to be desired; I still can't figure out what one grey, flat rectangular part is supposed to do (but not using it doesn't seem to be a problem, so it can't be too important). There's enough info in it to get the process going, though.
For some reason, I expected it to start making ice faster, but it does take awhile (at least 30 minutes or more) for the unit to reach freezing temperature, so don't give up too soon. The ice it produces is clear and tastes "restaurant" great (I used bottled drinking water in the reservoir), and I am very finicky about the taste of water and ice. I'd read that with some other ice makers users had needed to run vinegar through the system to get rid of a funny taste at first, but that is definitely not required for this unit.
You'll need to transfer the ice cubes to a container that you keep in the freezer to keep them frozen. The ice making unit is just for making the ice, not for storing it.
This is a pricey solution to eliminate the monotony of filling ice trays day after day after day, but I'm thrilled to be able to do so.
For high-volume, high-quality ice cubes from a portable machine, turn to this convenient countertop appliance. The easy-to-use ice maker produces up to 33 pounds of ice cubes per day--great for keeping guest's refreshments chilled at a weekend work conference or at a large party with family and friends. Change the size of the ice cubes with the simple press of a button--choose from 1/4-inch wide to 1/3-inch wide. The appliance also comes equipped with a fluidization system that ensures perfectly transparent ice cubes. Its internal fluidization system--a process normally only found in restaurant ice machines--freezes ice cubes in thin, transparent layers instead of one large block, which ensures crystal-clear results, eliminating any output of less desirable cloudy cubes. In addition to its portable design, the handy machine offers quick start-up times as well. Simply add water to the reservoir and plug it in--the unit will produce up to 28 square ice cubes in the first 18 minutes. Thoughtfully designed, the water reservoir removes for easy refilling, and an audible signal indicates when the 2-1/5-pound-capacity ice bin has reached capacity and/or when the 1-2/3-quart water reservoir needs to be re-filled. A full ice tank or empty water tank will cause the machine's compressor to stop automatically for safety and peace of mind. Other highlights include rugged construction with all internal screws made of stainless steel, integrated side handles for secure transport, and an attractive silver-spray finish. The 195-watt countertop ice maker measures 13-1/2 by 11-3/4 by 14 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
Tovolo Perfect Cube Silicone Ice Cube Tray Review
Tovolo Perfect Cube Silicone Ice Cube Tray
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
I was surprised to see the reviews here.
* I don't taste 'rubber' from these.
* I do think the other points are fairly valid.
However, I still think these are really cool. Granted, they are not firm (no silicon is) so you have to hold them carefully after filling and put them on a flat surface in the freezer. Granted, silicon is not a slippery surface, so you can't push-slide them anywhere. Granted, they hold the cubes pretty well, so I twist it a couple times then tend to use my finger to push up on the bottom of the cubes I want to come out.
But on the other hand,
* They fit more ice cubes into a smaller space in my freezer.
* They are a better shape IMO.
* Unlike normal trays, they don't dump a dozen ice cubes everywhere when I just want a few out for a drink. I can push out what I want and put the tray back. So I consider this 'a feature not a bug'.
Now, if you have a need to very quickly use many trays of ice, so you need to be able to grab something, twist, get a shower of cubes, and move on, then this is NOT the ice cube tray for you.
But if you often use only some of the tray, and if freezer space is a premium, and if your fingers to push up on the bottom of a cube or pull it out are not crippled, then I think this is a great ice cube tray.
I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because some of the points people made are valid. It's simply that some of them are not any problem with the product, they are merely a factor of what the product inherently is, e.g., that it is not firm, that it will not 'slide', that all the cubes don't just fall out with a twist -- these are issues of silicon (or the literal cube shape rather than slightly slanted sides), which means it's a 'given' for the product, not a fault, just personal preference about this "kind" of product/feature.
If you want the cube shape, you get the "they don't all fall out at once". If you want the silicon, you get the "doesn't slide" and "isn't rigid". If you don't want those features, well don't buy this ice cube tray, and you'd have no complaints. I actually wanted them, so I think it's a good product.
The print for my refrigerator showed the part #WR30X0327 as the icemaker I needed. Apparently it's obsolete and this #WR30X10093 was supposed to be the direct replacement. The adapter cord made the complete cord assembly way too long so had to do some maneuvering to get all the cord placed in the back so it could be mounted. Then the basket would not slide back in as this model hangs to low.
Then I get on here and find I can't return it. Great system!!
Magic Chef Icemaker Stainless Steel MCIM30SST Review
Magic Chef Icemaker Stainless Steel MCIM30SST
Average Reviews:
I purchased this portable ice maker for myself. In the box, it was large, heavy and cumbersome. I got it out of the box and managed to heft it onto the countertop, next to my sink. You have to wait four hours before you can use it so the refrigerant can settle. During that time, I washed the basket, scoop, and inside of the unit with warm and mildly soapy water. I suggest letting the unit stay open during the four hours to help the plastic odor dissipate. After four hours had passed, I filled up the water tank up to the bottom of the plastic basket. (You put the water in the front portion, underneath the removable ice basket.) I plugged in the machine and the "add water" light came on. Whaaa??? I pushed start and the machine attempted to begin but shut itself off because of the "add water" light. I added more water so it was slightly higher than the bottom of the basket and added some to the top where the icemaker mechanism was and then I pressed start again. I was happy to see the machine stayed on and within 7 minutes I had medium sized ice cubes. The medium cubes are slightly over 1 inch long with a hole in the middle. A gallon of water made enough ice cubes to fill three gallon sized zippable freezer bags. The unit stopped making ice when the water level dropped too low. At that point I turned it off and drained it because I had enough ice to last me for the week. Do the first batches of ice taste "plasticky"? I think they do, but they can be thrown away.
Cuisinart ICE-50BC Supreme Ice Cream Maker Review
Cuisinart ICE-50BC Supreme Ice Cream Maker
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)
Like another reviewer, I was happy to see a compressor machine available for a reasonable price. I'd owned a smaller machine with a bowl that was placed in the freezer, but the ice cream wasn't as creamy as I wanted and the results varied dramatically from batch to batch.
Armed with a gift certificate (plus quite a bit more), I ordered this machine. For the fourth of July, I made 3 flavors for a party (vanilla, chocolate, & stawberry--I went with the basics), making the bases for each the night before. The next morning, I froze all three ice creams in less than two hours. With a compressor machine, it's easy to make multiple batches one after the other. And the ice cream was a hit at the party, too.
Some tips:
1. The first batch I made was a simple recipe from the instructions which contained no eggs. While it turned out OK, it couldn't compare with custard-based ice creams that include egg yolks. The custard bases consistently result in smoother, creamier, and richer ice cream.
2. Try to make the ice cream base the night before you'll be freezing it (especially custard bases). It allows the flavors to blend and ensures the base is cold. A cold base will freeze more rapidly and is less likely to develop ice crystals.
3. When making chocolate ice cream, using quality chocolate rather than cocoa gives a richer flavor.
4. It's much easier to make ice cream when there's no need to have lots of ice and rock salt or remember to pre-freeze bowl wich may or may not fit in the freezer.
5. It also can freeze sorbets and sherberts and make slushies for the kids. I suppose you could make frozen drinks with it, but I'll stick to the blender for those.
I'm very happy with it so far. It seems well made, produces great ice cream, and has a larger capacity than many other compressor units. While I expect to usually make a half-batch at a time, the 1 1/2 quart capacity plus the ability to quickly freeze multiple batches is great for those times when you need lots of ice cream.
We have purchased several snow cone machines over the years and this is my favorite!!! Each Spring, I make snow cones for 4 classrooms full of children (over 100 children). Using the Hamilton Beach Icy Treats Maker, this has been our best year! Also, we often will do snowcones out in the driveway after school and we'll have a dozen or so kids stop by.
I purchased two of these machines and had them running side by side in the classroom. I was able to make snow cones for 25-30 kids in 20 minutes. I love the cup/bowl that catches the ice. If you have leftover ice or want to make ahead, you can throw this bowl in the freezer to use the shaved ice later. Also the easy on/off on this machine is nice. If you put in ice that is the right size (some store bought ice is too big), then there shouldn't be too much trouble with jamming. Once or twice I had to arrange the ice because a larger piece was stuck. I LOVE that most of this machine goes straight into the dishwasher! Also, seems very safe to me. The kindergarten class was running both machines and had no trouble!
